If you’re a visual [related to seeing] learner, you’re in for a treat [something good and enjoyable]! Your brain doesn’t love boring word lists; it craves [wants strongly] vivid [bright and clear], colorful images. Let’s use this to our advantage and turn vocabulary learning into something truly memorable [easy to remember].
Bring Words to Life with Visual Tricks
Words can be tough to remember when they’re just sitting there on the page. But if you pair [put together] them with an image—especially a strange one—they come alive. I’ll let you in on a little secret: the crazier the picture, the better it works.
Ming and the Elephant Tea Party
One of my students, Ming from China, struggled [had a hard time] with animal vocabulary. He couldn’t, for the life of him, remember the word “elephant.” So I told him, “Imagine an elephant sipping [drinking slowly] tea in a British tea shop, monocle [a single eyeglass] and all.” Now, every time he hears “elephant,” he pictures that scene—a fancy pachyderm [a large animal like an elephant] daintily [gently and delicately] sipping tea. Weird? Totally. But unforgettable [something you can’t forget]? Absolutely!
Visual Learning in Action
Try it next time you’re learning new words. Picture them, draw them, and see how much easier vocabulary learning becomes when your brain has something visual to hold onto.
